The ice cream dilemma

Today certainly didn't go the way that I planned. I thought when Ryan and I picked Kyle up from pre-school that we would go to the library and frolic through the books and then go somewhere to have lunch where no one would be tired or whiney or anything but wonderfully behaved. Then the rain came. Then the temperatures dropped. Then everything went in completely a different direction. The cold, wet rain had me second guess my idea to get these babies in and out of the car. And so we did the next best thing (and also the thing that everyone else in our town did as well). We got in the Chick-fil-a drive through line and did our best to patiently wait. Only Ryan was in tears (uncomfortable most likely since I had him in so many layers that he couldn't move) and Kyle started crying because I gave Ryan something that Kyle wanted. And I would be lying if I said that this is where I imagined my life and yet here I was trying to figure out how to keep everyone happy and get through this line and home just as fast as we could. Kyle is thriving in school. He sings the little songs and talks non-stop these days. He says mine and No way too often but he is funny and smart and crazy sweet. Lately he has been telling me that he is going to work and will grab my keys and sunglasses and say bye bye Mommy, have fun Mommy, I have to go to work and then hi Mommy, how was your day?  I can hardly keep up with him. This morning when I made the mistake of showering and thinking that the boys were okay for 3 minutes, he proved me wrong. He somehow go in to a jar of Vasoline and had it all over himself, Effie, the couch and other places that I am sure I will soon find the sticky and almost impossible to clean substance. So we get back from our rather boring little outing of just the drive-thru and everyone's not in a good mood and we waiting too long for our food. Kyle is losing it over the ice-cream cone that I am holding in my hand to give him AFTER lunch and IF he's a good boy. More tears. Spilled milk. Laying on floor. Upstairs we go to nap because at this point I really don't have any answers or know what to do. And so he fights me for a short amount of time before he gives in, sucks his thumb, snuggles as close to me as he can get and reaches for my face to hold as his eyes get heavy and he drifts off for these much needed rest. Two minutes later, I do my best to sneak out of his bed and fly downstairs to feed Ryan and make sure that he does't feel abandoned. He has been so talkative and doing so big and clapping and waving... and before I know it, I almost have Ryan is a sleep state about 90 minutes later when I hear Kyle calling me from upstairs. They just have not wanted to nap at the same time - especially since daylight savings time when we could all use a little more R and R. Kyle wakes up like everything earlier never even happened. Smiley and happy and his usual self. And in a MAJOR ROOKIE mom move, I pull out the ice cream that started this whole thing earlier and so what is a 2.5 year old to do!? He stops eating his lunch and throws a total fit and at this point I have had enough and give him the ice cream (what is wrong with me?) and go in the other room after dishing myself some mint chocolate chip so I can not be bossed around by this precious little stubborn soul and we can both eat our ice cream in peace.
